Chapter Fifteen

I pulled into the parking garage of Deidre’s building. I felt some kind of way being in workout gear seeing all of the professionals walking around. I worked from home as an author and editor of the local paper so I never had to get all fly and shit for work. I have kind of sort of wanted to though, but hell I save my ass off on clothing that way and commutes so yea, that pro trumps my desire for going into the office.

I got into the lobby area and I am greeted by a smiling dark skinned sister with a short crop cut that perfectly frames her oval face. She is donning a blue and white security uniform and she has black thin rimmed glasses and has a bright smile welcoming all of the visitors to Regal Towers.

“Good afternoon ma’am, may I help you,” she said.

I love warm southern friendly women, especially sisters. Every now and then you happen upon the ones with the stank attitudes, even though customer service is supposed to be their job and that shit grinds my gears; but I love to engage when a fellow sister shows me love. It’s so much easier to smile and have a pleasant disposition than to have a turned up look on your face, mad cause you got bills and gotta work. Bitch it ain’t my fault. Get a sponsor or play lotto or something. Don’t take your anger out on me when you doing your job.

“Good afternoon ma’am. I am doing just fine. Thank you for asking. How about you,” I asked.

“Oh, I can’t complain darling. Who are you here to see?”

Just as I was answering a rush of people came out the elevator and a fudge brownie colored man with light eyes and dreads in a black and gray pinned stripe suit was giving them farewell salutations and thanking them for coming. Of the entire party of five, my eyes honed in on him for some reason. There was an eager beaver chick who smiled at him all goofy and shit and clung to his every word. I had done a partial three-sixty and turned to observe. I am nosy like that. I watch people and their interactions. I always study people. That helps me to build out characters for my stories. I get caught staring a lot and I hurry and fess up to my profession. Some folks get it and others don’t. But if someone says some smart shit, I know how to lay into someone and make them feel like shit without even mentioning a four letter word. That is my gift.

“Umm, Benita Davis-Day for Deidre Jackson,” I said snapping from my distraction as the suited up guy made his way back towards the elevator.
